AI-assisted development#
PyWAsP’s maintainers use AI coding assistants as a development aid. The maintainers remain responsible for the design, implementation, review, testing, and release of the software: every change is reviewed by a maintainer before it is merged, and AI tools never merge, tag, or release.
The licensed WAsP core models (the Fortran flow, obstacle and climate models) and the licensing library are excluded from AI assistance: the tools are configured so that they cannot read those sources, and no change to them is produced with AI assistance.
AI-assisted changes are treated the same way as any other contribution: they
are reviewed, modified where necessary, and must pass the same test suite,
including the golden reference tests that pin the numerical output of the
WAsP calculations, before they are included in a release. A defect is
handled the same way regardless of how the code was written. Commits in
which an AI tool produced a substantive part of the change carry an
Assisted-by: trailer naming the tool, which lets the maintainers track
and audit AI-assisted changes.
AI tools have been used in PyWAsP since July 2026; release 2.1.0 is the first to contain AI-assisted code. The use of AI assistance does not change the licensing of PyWAsP or the responsibility of the maintainers for the released software.
