AI-assisted development#

WindKit’s maintainers use AI coding assistants as a development aid. The maintainers remain responsible for the design, implementation, review, testing, and release of the software: every change is reviewed by a maintainer before it is merged, and AI tools never merge, tag, or release.

AI-assisted changes are treated the same way as any other contribution: they are reviewed, modified where necessary, and must pass the same test suite, including reference-value tests where present, before they are included in a release. A defect is handled the same way regardless of how the code was written. Commits in which an AI tool produced a substantive part of the change carry an Assisted-by: trailer naming the tool, which lets the maintainers track and audit AI-assisted changes.

AI tools have been used in WindKit since March 2026; the first release containing AI-assisted code was 2.1.0. The use of AI assistance does not change the licensing of WindKit or the responsibility of the maintainers for the released software.
